US Rep. Mo Brooks’ proposals and statements undermine Democracy and threaten the Nation
HUNTSVILLE, AL, January 31, 2013 — In light of a constant stream of ammunition provided by Alabama’s 5th District’s US Representative, the chair of the Madison County Democrats issued a challenge for sanity and respect for the true roles of government, and questioned the incumbent’s ability to be an effective representative for his constituents.
“Just when you think Mo Brooks has found an all-time political low, he somehow finds a way to dig deeper,” said Clete Wetli, chair of the Madison County Democratic Party. “Recently, he voted against raising the debt ceiling which pays the bills for money Congress has already spent, then he voted against Hurricane Sandy relief after supporting relief for tornado damage in Alabama.”
“Now he has reached a record new low by proposing his “Protecting America’s Solvency” bill which would effectively end our great democracy. The bill permanently denies the Federal government any ability to raise any new taxes, generate revenue, or levy fines. This would destroy completely the government’s ability to do any type of regulation. Further, it calls for the impeachment of the President if Congress fails to pass a budget,” Wetli added.
“At first, people in Alabama were asking Mo to simply ‘do the math’, but now we’re concerned that he slept through his high school civics class. “
These points are made considering that many of Brooks’ constituents in Alabama’s 5th Congressional District are government employees or government contractors, and the consideration that Superfund toxic waste cleanup at Redstone Arsenal is currently ongoing.
Wetli and Democrats contend that Brooks’ allegiance to the anti-government Tea Party has made him an extremist and his views are treading dangerously close to treasonous; that most who love this country understand that effective government requires limits, but Brooks’ bill is so severe that it comes dangerously close to having the potential of destroying our nation. Few of Brooks’ bills receive co-sponsors or make it out of Committee.
“I really wish he had tuned in when Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) spoke recently because this latest Mo masterpiece is, frankly, in line with Jindal’s “stupid” reference,” added Wetli.
The Alabama and Madison County Democrats believe in the equality of all people, the power of education, the dignity of work, and our responsibility to each other, especially the least of these people. The Democratic Party of Madison County promotes and supports progressive ideals and candidates throughout our communities.
