Huntsville, AL, June 27, 2012— The Madison County Democratic Party came out in support of most of Monday’s decision by the US Supreme Court on Arizona’s extreme immigration law. The Court reviewed four provisions of the law and held that three of the four are preempted by federal law.

There are ongoing proceedings regarding the only section upheld about whether it involves racial profiling/civil rights violations; that issue was not before the Court. The Court’s decision indicates that the law is invalid because it attempts to exercise a power over immigration that belongs solely to the federal government. Alabama’s immigration law contains sections similar to the almost all of the sections of Arizona’s law struck down by the Supreme Court.

“This is a clear victory for the Constitution, but the greatest outcome of this ruling is that Alabama’s Immigration Law has been successfully challenged in the highest court.” said Clete Wetli, Chair of Madison County Democratic Party.

“The Republican supermajority passed HB56 in 2011, and did little to improve it in 2012. The consequences of the Alabama law for families is heart-wrenching and immoral. Madison county Democrats are optimistic that other discriminatory and unconstitutional portions of Alabama’s law will be repealed and that the Alabama immigration law will not become a drain on limited state and county government resources, by further filling our overflowing prisons with undocumented immigrants and threatening to take funding away from education and senior citizens,” added Wetli.

The Alabama and Madison County Democrats believe in the equality of all people, the power of education, the dignity of work, and our responsibility to each other, especially the least of these people. The Democratic Party of Madison County promotes and supports progressive ideals and candidates throughout our communities.
