Huntsville, AL, June 8, 2012— The Madison County Democratic Party announced its disappointment with the closing of 17 Veterans’ Administration Offices in Alabama as a result of budget cuts.

The Madison County Democrats admonished the Republican Party in the state and nationally for being quick to call for wars that help the few make large profits off of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but not having a plan or compassion for the wounded warriors who have sacrificed their minds and bodies for those profits. Veterans are returning home to a state that is condemning them to substandard care. “Democrats believe in an America where people take care of each other and reject this “pull yourself up by your boot straps” notion, because the assumption is that everyone has boots – and some veterans lost limbs in the wars,” said Clete Wetli, Chair of Madison County Democratic Party. “Instead of facing the real fiscal problems in Alabama, like fair taxation that would prevent the extreme cuts our state is experiencing on all fronts, the Republican supermajority insists on balancing the budget at the expense of the middle class, children, the elderly, poor, and our veterans and by slashing programs that support basic services like education, Medicare, and now veterans. They’re doing this to keep tax breaks for the wealthy and corporate donors. It’s a disgrace.”

“Veterans’ needs are immediate, real and often long term; access to Veterans’ resources like the field offices and hospitals are often their first step in finding care. Rather than ensuring that wealthy individuals and corporations pay their fair share of taxes, the Republican supermajority has chosen to work the math with budget cuts, abandoning our veterans in need,” said Wetli. “Democrats understand that veterans are honorable people who made great sacrifices for our country. As citizens and as a government, it is our duty to provide these services, and Alabama Democrats are here to say that we thank our veterans for their service and, more importantly, we are committed to making sure that they have access to the services they need when they return from duty and come back home.

The Alabama and Madison County Democrats believe in the equality of all people, the power of education, the dignity of work, and our responsibility to each other, especially the least of these. The Democratic Party of Madison County promotes and supports progressive ideals and candidates throughout our communities.
