Huntsville, AL, August 31, 2012 — The Madison County Democratic Party has listened and determined: if this was Mitt Romney’s best speech ever, it’s easy to see why people like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are considered prophets of the GOP.

The assessment comes after Romney’s acceptance speech closed the GOP National Convention in Tampa Thursday evening. His “best” was packed with cliché rhetoric, stale right-wing talking points, and a shameful and disingenuous pandering to women voters and conservative cold war hawks – yet short on substance and disclosure on the GOP’s approved platform and plans to create improvement for the Middle Class.

“I was astounded to hear the lack of substance in his vision for America, his tiresome attacks on the President, who – factually – has accomplished amazing victories for the middle class, in spite of lockstep Republican opposition,” said Clete Wetli, Chair of Madison County Democratic Party. “One couldn’t help but notice the lack of diversity in the convention audience, or the ideological agreement that Republicans seem to share that America is simply about nothing more than unfettered individualism and that somehow government is intrinsically evil and over-reaching. “ Wetli continued.

“The truth is that the U.S. government is the expression of our collective will as a nation and its actions are manifest in our greatest collective accomplishments with things like our infrastructure, our space program, our labor laws, and our social safety net,” Wetli said. “Romney believes in “every man for himself” policies, which will do nothing more than increase wealth disparity, curtail women’s rights, and allow Wall Street to recklessly gamble with our collective economic future. Romney and Ryan will do nothing more than take us back to the policies of George W. Bush.”

The Alabama and Madison County Democrats believe in the equality of all people, the power of education, the dignity of work, and our responsibility to each other, especially the least of these. The Democratic Party of Madison County promotes and supports progressive ideals and candidates throughout our communities.
