HUNTSVILLE, AL, February 19, 2013 — Madison County Democrats attending the town hall held by US Rep. Mo Brooks, 5th Congressional District found it difficult to watch the hyper-partisan, Grover Norquist-inspired video that Brooks used to begin his address to constituents.
“Rep. Mo Brooks recited his well-rehearsed incantation of cherry-picked statistics in a desperate attempt to blame the President for Congress’ inability to reach a balanced solution that would avoid devastating sequestration cuts,” said Clete Wetli, chair of the Madison County Democratic Party. “Not once did ‘Do-Little Mo’ mention anything that would spur economic growth; instead he advocated only cuts that would hurt the poor and middle class, while pandering to his tea party base by stoking the fires of hatred,” Wetli added.
In watching Mo’s response to audience questions, many who were not a part of the tea party contingent present left feeling that Brooks has earned his reputation as a master of verbal misdirection and devious demagoguery who has no interest in working on balanced or practical solutions. The great irony that Brooks was elected by proclaiming he doesn’t believe in government and now has clearly shown how that disbelief can impede our collective progress was not lost on many in the audience. His ability to vote “No” on many important issues (Hurricane Sandy relief, his unconstitutional and insipid plan for U.S. “solvency,” his insensitive and hate-inducing comments on immigration, failure to support bills creating jobs, and others) the citizens of Madison County understand that Mo’s only interest is to monotonously promote the failed rhetoric and ideology of the xenophobic tea party to insure his re-election.
“Unfortunately, the people of Madison County are stuck with a sophomoric snake oil salesman instead of an intelligent and pragmatic statesman who uses his background in economics as a license to parade half-true statistics, faux numbers, and faulty equations that simply don’t add up. Last night, Mo did a great job of creating and encouraging fear and pointing out problems, but he never did what his constituents have asked him to do: propose a common sense solution.
“He artfully answered questions that would show his opposition for President Obama (and blew that dog-whistle loudly and often), but failed to offer any alternative solutions on any major issue. He showed a McCarthy-like skepticism in all things related to the White House as his rationale for Congressional inaction and his right-wing political posturing,” added Wetli.
The Alabama and Madison County Democrats believe in the equality of all people, the power of education, the dignity of work, and our responsibility to each other, especially the least of these people. The Democratic Party of Madison County promotes and supports progressive ideals and candidates throughout our communities.
